Our Beginnings A Legacy of Compassion
In 1935 most veterinary practices were mixed practices – providing care for animals of all types, from cows, sheep, and other farm animals, to dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small animals. Dr. George Cameron Sr. had a novel idea – to open a practice and construct a building specifically to be a hospital for small animals. And in 1936, Cameron Small Animal Hospital opened its doors in Montclair - the first purposely built small animal hospital in the state of New Jersey. From the brass doorways, to elaborate wood paneling, to marble kennels for dogs, to copper skylights, no detail was neglected. Even the unique design of the waiting room with boxes to separate pets, complete with ashtrays for cigars (since removed), was thought out with care.
Cameron Animal Hospital opened its doors in Montclair with a mission to deliver compassionate, excellent care, and Dr. Cameron dedicated himself to that mission. He similarly dedicated himself to the animals of the community and was known to never turn away a stray in need. This unwavering commitment to exemplary care and community service became the foundation of our practice.
A Family Tradition
We still hear stories from long-time residents of how they brought stray animals to Dr. Cameron Sr, asking for help. He passed that commitment on to his son, Dr. George Cameron Jr., whose unwavering dedication to the community and stray animals is legend.
Dr. George Cameron Jr. grew up helping his father at their dog kennels in Livingston, NJ and at the animal hospital. In 1970, following his graduation from the University of Guelph veterinary school, he joined his father in practice.
Sadly they were only able to practice together for a few months before Dr. Cameron Sr. became critically ill. However, Dr. George Cameron Jr. stepped into his father's shoes and dedicated himself to the practice, and to helping the animals of the community with even greater commitment. Dr. Cameron expanded his father's direct rescue and adoption efforts, and he also played a role in founding more than a dozen different shelter groups in the area. Under his guidance, the hospital became a true cornerstone of Montclair, serving not only Montclair families but also welcoming clients from throughout Essex County and the state.
The Old-Fashioned Family Doctor
Cameron Animal Hospital is more than a veterinary clinic; it’s a family. Many of our clients have been coming to us for generations, and many of our staff members have been with us for decades. Our approach is inspired by the tradition of the old-fashioned family doctor – not only do we know many of our patients and clients by name, we know their histories, their problems, their likes and dislikes, and their favorite treats. And we have had the honor of watching families, both two and four legged, grow and change over the years. Cameron Animal Hospital always has been, and always will be, 100% family owned, and dedicated to what is right for your family and pets.
A New Era with Dr. Houston
Dr. Elizabeth Houston's family has been coming to Cameron Animal Hospital since before she was born, and many of her childhood memories involve visiting the hospital with one pet or another. She remembers seeing Dr. Cameron with kittens tucked into his coat pockets, helping animals whenever he could.
Dr. Houston officially joined the practice in 2015 following her graduation from the University of Edinburgh Veterinary School. When Dr. Cameron was ready to retire, he passed the reins to Dr. Houston, with the promise that it would always remain 'Cameron Animal Hospital' - both in name and mission.
A Commitment to Rescue and Community
Cameron Animal Hospital’s commitment to rescue work is part of our DNA. Dr. Camerons' Sr. and Jr. were known state-wide for their dedication to rescuing animals in need, and Dr. Houston has continued that part of our mission.
Cameron Animal Hospital has always provided direct care to animals – rescuing, providing any needed medical care, and finding adoptive homes for thousands of animals over the years. In 2024, Cameron Animal Rescue became an officially recognized 501c3 non-profit organization, which will allow us to continue to expand our rescue efforts and provide expanded programing.
Cameron Animal Hospital also works with multiple local shelters and rescue groups, providing veterinary care at significant discount to ensure the community's most vulnerable animals have access to high quality, affordable care.
A Lasting Community Legacy
Cameron Animal Hospital is deeply rooted in the Montclair community. We are a part of countless family stories, and we’re honored to continue writing new ones each day. Our dedication to carrying on a legacy of compassionate, inclusive care is stronger than ever. From our humble beginnings to today’s bustling practice, we are grateful for the trust our community places in us and look forward to many more years of service.
