What is Spay and Neuter Surgery?

Spay and neuter surgeries—often referred to as “fixing”—involve the removal of your pet’s reproductive organs. Females are spayed (removal of the uterus and ovaries), and males are neutered (removal of the testicles). These procedures prevent your pet from reproducing, and they come with a number of important health and behavioral benefits.

These are routine surgeries performed under general anesthesia. While any procedure carries a small degree of risk, spaying and neutering are widely considered safe and highly effective. And, when it comes to your pet’s safety and comfort, there’s no better care team around than the one at our Montclair animal hospital.

Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Aside from helping to reduce pet overpopulation and prevent unplanned litters, spaying and neutering offer significant medical and behavioral benefits:

Benefits for female pets who have been spayed include:

  • Prevention of uterine infections (pyometra), which can be life-threatening

  • Greatly reduced risk of mammary tumors, which are malignant in 90% of feline cases and 50% of dogs

  • Elimination of ovarian and uterine cancer risk

Perks for male pets who have been neutered include:

  • Prevention of testicular cancer

  • Reduction in risk of prostate issues and perineal hernias in dogs

  • Decrease in aggressive behavior, roaming, marking, and spraying

Is My Pet Too Old to be Spayed or Neutered?

It’s never too late. While the ideal time is usually around 6 months of age for cats and small dogs, older pets can absolutely benefit from the surgery as well. Before any procedure, we perform a full physical exam—and for older pets, we may recommend bloodwork or additional diagnostics to ensure they’re good surgical candidates.

Is Spaying or Neutering My Pet Safe?

While any anesthetic procedure carries minor risk, spaying and neutering are among the most commonly performed surgeries in veterinary medicine. At Cameron Animal Hospital, your pet’s safety is our top priority and we promise to take care of them like they are our own.
